Professor Chinda who revealed that a largely polluted state like Rivers State does not have any monitoring stations on land, water or air, said that the need for constant research and monitoring in the state has become a matter of great urgency not only because the lives of the residents are involved but that steady monitoring and research will help the state to spend wisely. "I read a journal that a river in Europe has been monitored regularly for one hundred and sixteen years" he said, stressing that a government that cares about the natural endowments of his state or region should not waste time in doing everything for the preservation of these God given gifts, because these are the only source of our wealth and well being.He said that government should also encourage private researchers whose findings will be documented by the Ministry of Environment, pointing out that researches or steady monitoring are some of those things that are intangible but of great value. "These days when we want climate information we all go the airport. Formerly, primary schools had good rain gauge and other scientific reading equipment. And readings were taken on daily basis" he said lamenting that the past leaders killed those novel ideas. "These days we don't know the seasons anymore. We don't know when it is raining; we don't know when it is harmattan. Ones in a while you see harmattan blow, the next it is off". He called on the government to take researches serious no matter their cost and said that the researches could be carried out by any authentic body and not necessarily the University of Science and Technology. "We are not asking the government to give us research contracts. In fact they can give to any authentic body but please they need to do it quickly!" he said.
