Mr. Irikese Dafe, an environmental activist and the coordinator of River Ethiope Trust Foundation in Nigeria has warned that all the rivers in the country are not fit for aquatic activities. While chatting with Rivgreen correspondent last Thursday, Mr. Dafe gave the warning with a call for urgent government action to save our rivers.Mr. Dafe warned that his research, which has taken him round many rivers in the country, has revealed high levels of pollution going by national and international parametres. "Most of our rivers are completely unfit for any form of aquatic life activity as required by world standards" he said.Mr. Dafe also said that by the pollution levels of most rivers in the country has affected the products from the rivers especially fish and other edible food sources derived from them. "Imagine a fisherman going to fish in a polluted river; and he carries such fish to the market where he sells it to you and I. Of course a fish that feeds on polluted water is also polluted!" he said.He lamented that most rivers where people used to drink and swim before are not even fit for washing hands. He warned that people have neglected the fact that without water there would be no life. "All life is based on water. There is no community anywhere in the world that exists without closeness to water bodies" he said, warning that the quickest way to poison a community is through their water source. He also pointed out that people who are meant to protect water bodies for their immense usefulness to our lives and wealth, have been oriented to treat water bodies as enemies by turning these water bodies into waste dumps. On the issue of boreholes, he said that polluted rivers would beget polluted boreholes because underground water is majorly recharged by rivers. He called on the Federal Government to borrow a leaf from the United States where every river, stream, or lake has a foundational body guarding it. "These people understand the usefulness of rivers and will do everything to protect them" he said.
