The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) says it is sending a team of security agencies to warehouses to stop the sale of used electronics items and refrigerators. Mr. Bola Fashina, Head of Corporate Affairs of SON, told newsmen in Lagos on Thursday that the organisation had decided to work with other security agencies to stop the influx of used electronic items into the country. It was reported that there had been reports of used electronic items containing toxic substances being imported into some West African countries, including Nigeria and Ghana. Fashia said that the used electronic items and fridges were still prohibited since the Federal Government had not lifted the ban.He said that these items were being smuggled into the country through unauthorized routes. According to him, such illegal routes have been a source of concern to the Nigerian Customs Service since these routes are not known to the security agencies. He assured that SON would not fold its hands while a few people impair the lives of Nigerians. "We have concluded arrangements to crack down on these smugglers to stop the trend," he said.Fashina said that many used items contain dangerous toxic chemicals that could cause health hazards such as cancer, ulcer and blindness. |
